After reading the first book in this series, The Duke's Holiday (The Regency Romp Trilogy Book 1), I was determined to grab all future books by this author. When I received a couple of days' notice this book would be available, I immediately pre-ordered. I was not disappointed.

Our main characters, Sebastian Sherbrooke (Sherry) and Lady Katherine Manwaring, were supporting characters in the first book. Although we weren't given much of a back story, we did know Katherine was married to Sherry's uncle and that there was something between the two of them. Katherine came across as an ice queen and Sherry was a gorgeous "manly" man whose primary interest seemed to be mostly centered around his appearance.

In this book, we finally learn all the details. Sherry has been traveling away from home for two years. His uncle has passed and Sherry is the new Marquess. He's not excited about the honor and even if he were, he's very distracted by a pressing situation on his horizon. He's been accused of impregnating a young lady who has followed him around attempting to entrap him. He refuses to be entrapped and accepts her father's challenge to a duel. He knows he will be persona non grata once it's spread around that he's ruined a young lady but He. Does. Not. Care. - even stating, "I would rather marry my piano." Regardless of the truth, Sherry's long had a reputation of being the rake of all rakes so people will believe the worst.

So, the book begins with a bang as the reader is made privy to the duel and the aftermath. Then, to further confuse things, Sherry immediately gives away the "unentailed" funds from his inheritance to a charity even though he's in the suds himself. All the goings on keep the reader wondering exactly what the problems were between Sherry and his uncle. Also, how will Sherry and Katherine ever get together? Since Sherry's uncle has passed, leaving Katherine a widow - it might seem there is now a clear path for the two of them if they decide to go for it. Nope - not that simple. She's still Sherry's aunt and even if the two of them ever get things worked out, it would be illegal to marry one's aunt in England. Lots of angst going on - good thing there's an equal amount of humor threaded throughout the book so that the reader doesn't have much of a chance to become stressed.

Ms. Fenton has an amazing ability to develop fascinating characters who are serious and yet often hilarious. I love reading the thoughts of her characters as much or more than reading the dialogue. There's a fun mixture of slapstick, satire, funny banter and some serious stuff all mixed up together which keeps the reader absolutely dialed in. By the way, I despise slapstick comedy, but for some reason, I enjoy her particular brand. I was reading at 2:00 am this morning trying to keep my laughter down so I wouldn't wake my husband.

Once I completed this book, I had to pull out "The Duke's Holiday" in order to refresh my memory about some of the characters - not necessary, but I was interested enough in the second book to dig out some additional nuggets from the first one. Although this is a stand-alone book, I would highly recommend reading the first book in the series.

I consider Ms. Fenton's stories to be totally outside the box when compared to most traditional regency romance novels. Her writing reminds me a bit of some of Kasey Michaels' books (the funny ones). Loved, loved this book and look forward to the next one. Wonder if Marlowe will have his own book? Now, that would take some writing!

Virtuous Scoundrel The Regency Romp Trilogy Book 2 edition by Maggie Fenton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really LOVED Sebastian in The Duke's Holiday and I was dying to read his book but I was really disappointed with this book. The events were awkward and forced. The H and h were inconsistent. They hated each other with fiercness then suddenly Sebastian wants to court and woo her? WHAT? Did I miss something here?

Sebastian changed from the dark exqusite mysterious beautiful man to a weak simpering teen!! And why dies he POUT a lot?!!! Not exactly manly. And we want a manly man like Montford!!
I still love Sebastian but I feel Fenton ruined him for me. I saw some tiny glimpses of his former glorious rakish character, but mostly he was frustratingly whiny and childish. He should have been stronger and more masculine.

The characters changed a lot from The Duke's Holiday. Even Astride! What the hell happened to her? In her story she was strong and fiery and stunning but here she is a smirking society gossip at best! When did she obsesse about society like that? Where is the strong indepented miss Honeywell?? She is like a totally different person! So annoying!!

The Duke retained some of his magnificent ducal arrogance thank God! Marlow also was the same man , kind of.

As for Catherine, I felt she is weird. Cold as ice, cruel one moment than tender and passionate the next moment. I don't understand her and I did not like her. She is stupid sometimes! She was also cruel to Sebastian!! I wanted to smack her on the face several times!!

The H and h changed suddenly. There is no gradual development. The passion bw the H and h was unconvincing.
The dog drama was tedious and so much attention was given to the dogs.

So why the 3 stars? Its because of the humor ! The dialogue was clever and witty and I laughted so many times. The author is brilliant with dialogue. But I wanted more dialogue. The first half of the book consists mostly of internal dialogue that is looong and tedious.

If you liked The Duke's Holidy and you miss the characters read this book.

I think the next book will be about Marlow and a certain .. ehm.. Wallflower ! I can't wait!
This author writes with humor about ridiculous occurrences in ordinary events that quite literally had me giggling out loud. She paints a vivid picture of society parties and how guests should behave but don't. We first meet our lovers in the first book of a three-book series. He is Sebastian Sherbrook, newly Marquess of Manwaring, and universally regarded as the most beautiful man in London, who has fallen in love with his uncle's wife. She is Katherine Blanchard, Marchioness of Manwaring, who fell in love with Sebastian at first sight, but due to misunderstandings, neither is aware of the other's feelings. From the beginning of this book, the reader is rooting for the lovers to get together, as one survives a non-fatal duel, a derailed lawsuit, a brawl involving a broken nose and mountains of gooey cake and frosting, and, ultimately a seduction. I can't wait for the final book of this trilogy to be released!
