I watched the Dateline episode about this and hoped that this book might explain the family history and relationships a little bit more. I wanted to know more about the husband's background and how this supposed perfect husband and father turned into such a loser seemingly over just a couple of years. I also wanted to know how the two adult daughters who appeared to be in total denial when being interviewed by Dateline, could reconcile their loyalty to their father over their mother, the victim. The older daughter in particular came across as a deluded daddy's girl on Dateline and the book did nothing to dispel that notion while not even attempting to explain why she chose to support her father instead of her mother. I guess I have been spoiled by reading Ann Rule books over the years where she always delved into the personal histories so that you came away feeling like you had the whole story. This book got bogged down in the minutiae of the trial testimonies and characters to the point that I skipped over sections of it. I appreciate that Nancy is a Christian and it is wonderful that her faith has helped her deal with everything but I agree with another reviewer who said it should have been marketed as a Christian book; the scripture quoting and constant references to the miracle of her survival got a little old. I have a feeling that the 5 star reviews are church friends of the victim and author.Tags : The Shooting of Nancy Howard: A Journey Back to Shore [Alice Mathews] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Shooting of Nancy Howard: A Journey back to Shore combines love, betrayal,Alice Mathews,The Shooting of Nancy Howard: A Journey Back to Shore,Dog Ear Publishing, LLC,1457554607,Attempted murder - Texas,Murder for hire - Texas,Trials (Murder) - Texas,True crime stories,Victims of violent crimes - Texas,TRUE CRIME General,TRUE CRIME Murder General

A good story, though couldn't keep all of the "gang" straight in my mind, too many details as to who they are, and their relationships to each other. I saw this on Dateline, which did a good job condensing a very complicated plot. Amazing how Nancy's husband kept handing them all money, even with no results. Some follow-up for the readers would have been nice to see if John/Frank received punishment for stealing all that money and with Suzanne to see how she really feels about John after he was found guilty. Truly feel for Nancy and hoping her daughters accept their father's guilt and to fully reconcile with their mother.
I just received my book from . It is great! This story is a great example of how our wonderful Lord and Savior is greater than any obstacles we face here on Earth. No matter how big an obstacle may seem or how terrifying the event seems to us, God is bigger and is able to rescue us if we ask Him to become our Lord and Savior and then trust that He is listening to us and will be there for us during our time of need. Nancy Howard's story is an example of her solid faith in God and how she trusted her Savior to help her make it through the terrible act that she faced..Nancy handled it by trusting our Lord which provides an awesome glimpse at her very strong testimony. Praying for her each day.
I loved it! I know Nancy Shore and Alice Mathews personally and attended several days in court during the trial of those involved in her shooting. The book details the events accurately. There are many "characters" involved in this true story!
What an amazing, true story! Nancy Howard is such a testimony to God's grace. It is appalling that a husband living in suburban Dallas would hire a hit man to kill his wife! The book recounts the day of the shooting in 2012, the years leading up to that day--Nancy and Frank's relationship and Frank's extensive efforts to get the deed done--and the trial that followed, along with Nancy's recovery from being shot in the face. It is an intricate story, and the author does an excellent job of presenting the details, even including a chart of the relationship of the web of wrongdoers' associates. The author closes with this "Our prayer throughout this journey [of writing the book] has been to honor the Lord and to show that even in the darkest of circumstances, he is faithful to rescue those who call on him. Nancy experienced that rescue--over and over." For those of you reading in a book club, at the back of the book the author provides 15 excellent discussion questions.
Loved this book! I could not put it down. Nancy endured the ultimate betrayal by her husband and unspeakable suffering. Yet she is a testimony to the faithfulness of God. This true story really is bizarre- exposing the evil underbelly of our society. Kudos to the detectives who sorted it all out to bring justice, and to the author for making it all easy for us to understand!
I got this book and couldn't put it down. Amazing story of how a woman survived a murder attempt from the one she loved the most. Nancy is one of the bravest and strongest people ever. Her testimony shines through clearly. What a testament to God's grace. Alice has an easy writing style that made even the mundane facts interesting. Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this book. I'll be recommending it to all my friends.
It's been a long time since I read a book in one sitting. The journey of these "characters" was so compelling that I could not put it down. On the one hand, it was disconcerting knowing someone could live a double life to that degree. But on the other hand, I was inspired by Nancy's forgiving spirit and hopeful outlook. I usually give away good books after I've read them, but this one is still on my nightstand. Every time I have a rough day or feel like life's out to get me, I look at the cover and am reminded that hope, grace, forgiveness, and strength are right there for me to claim.
ATTENTION GRAMMAR SNOBS You can breathe easy reading this. I can't remember the last time I read a book without finding a typo or a grammatical error.
