The Mountains Rise Embers of Illeniel Book 1 eBook Michael G Manning
I loved this book. Yes, it's bold but that's what makes it worthy of five stars. Manning took risks writing the series as he did to include sexual abuse. His approach is raw but much more responsibly done than some of the romantic fiction crap out there (can't recall the title but i'll come back to name it) that tells of young women who fall for abused men, later get tossed aside but are reunited after their love, persistence and patience finally breaks thru his barriers and the stone shield he surrounds himself with after years of abuse crumples and they live happily ever after. No this is gritty and mature. There are all sorts of discussion topics contained herein that can make for a lively round table discussion. Manning did his homework about victims and associative behavior like how they often lash out victimizing others, their self-esteem, confusion, depression etc.
So we meet Daniel, a kid when his story begins. He's kind, loving and gentle but life events mold him into half man half beast. He evolves into a complex being literally and figuratively speaking. The inert and inherent animalistic nature believed to lay within each human is literally forced out of him. Daniel must survive in a world where cruelty and suffering go hand in hand.

The Mountains Rise Embers of Illeniel Book 1 eBook Michael G Manning Reviews
I was looking to read some of the authors other works when I came across this tale. It intrigued me with it's emphasis on a bad person being the main character. I have recently become a fan of dark fantasy. For no other reason than the fact that the white knight thing gets old eventually. While this story is a mix of fantasy and science fiction, the fact remains it is dark with shades of grey that I enjoyed. The fact that the story is told third person, in a similar fashion to The name of the wind, adds new depth and twist to the tale. As soon as I finish this review I will be purchasing the second book in the tale. See you there!
Having already read "The Mageborn" series I was quite interested when I happened upon this new book Michael Manning had written. "The Mountains Rise" is a fantastic and dark, thrilling read. I've read hundreds of books and I would put this towards the top of my all time favorites. I decided to give this book a five star rating due to the overall plot of the story. It's dark and I love that. After reading about too many good protagonists with high morals this books protagonist brings a rare look into the darker side of things that other authors usually avoid. Alongside an amazing plot this book had great character building. The dynamic and static characters each offered something to the plot of the story without seeming thrown in out of nowhere or being completely random. The setting is that of the world set in "The Mageborn" series. However, it is two thousand years prior to those events. This world is different, changed from what you knew before but it is not disconcerting or overwhelmingly different.
It is easy to immerse yourself in this well written story. I would highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys fantastical magical worlds and characters. Furthermore, if you are looking for a darker, different view and the impotent affects in can cause, you should spend the time and money to read this book.
Michael is an amazing author and I literally can't wait for the nexts books to come out. As a longtime fantasy reader who was an obsessed Harry Potter fan and then Eragon, I can honestly say this is my favorite author for sure. If you like authors like him, check out Terry Mancour, who writes my SECOND favorite series. This is the only series that goes beyond 7 or so books that I think it only gets better and not repetitive. Worth every second of reading(and re reading)
I first started with this story via audible. It grabbed my attention so quickly that I came home from work, after listening to the narration to and from, and bought the kindle book so I could keep reading. I'm definitely NOT an "avid" reader, though I've read the GoT and LOTR series over time. I found the complex characters in this book to be a breath of fresh air. Be warned, it is DARK! There are very mature themes that will make you cringe at times. The story is the perfect balance of Fantasy and Science Fiction in my opinion. The series has me hooked and wanting even more. I am now reading the Mageborn series while waiting for the next installment. On that note, if you had read the Mageborn series, I will say that the writing in this series is clearly that of a more experienced writer and storyteller.
I think the thing that made me pick this book up in the first place was the forward. I read it as a sample and thought; "If the author needs to warn you about a character that may not always make the 'right' decision... it's gotta be good!"
I am a huge fan of Michael Manning. His Mageborn series is one of the best I've read. His writing has impressed me from the beginning, but this new book blew me away. The magic of "The Mountains Rise" is that, as ugly and painful as the story is, there is beauty in it as well. I discovered myself, friends, and acquaintances within the pages of this book. I saw, gazing at me from within the words, the faces people I've seen, but never known, other than some small part of their lives touched mine for a fleeting moment in time. Such is the power of this novel. It's not just about the characters, it's about what makes us human. Rarely has a work of fiction affected me on such a deep level.
As an aside I should say that, while it is a prequel to the Mageborn series, I would highly recommend that anyone new to this story doesn't begin with this book. Read the others first because it will help you understand the purpose of this one. The reader should also be aware that this book contains a lot of sexual content. It is tastefully handled, but some of it is harsh. I wouldn't recommend it for teens.
To Mr. Manning Well done! I wish you health and success and am looking forward to the book on Gram, as well as the sequel to "Mountains."
